autumn is here, a time for gathering the harvest and preparing for the long nights of winter. it is also a time of celebration. we are a kingdom of great and varied talents over many elds, and we hope you will join us as entrant or spectator to celebrate our new champions as they display their talents at the following events. at coronation: heavy weapons at crown: archery and thrown weapons at a&s champs: arts & science anticipated at 12th night: bardic still to be decided: queen’s rapier, brewing and youth fighting. furthermore, it is our great pleasure to announce that we will bestow our champions with a hand painted pendant that they can keep, created by the renowned hand of elyse le bref. we will also be looking for people to honor throughout our kingdom. please look around and see who is missing from the ranks of our various orders. look especially for those who have yet to receive their award of arms, many of whom have toiled quietly for years. it’s also important to look at what events these gentles will attend during our royal progress when recommending, as being called into court is part of the magic in celebrating their accomplishments. remember you too have the ability to recognize the good that you see happening by bestowing a token or simply saying thank you. our mind is never far from our beloved prince, and it is in his honor we continue on. there is joy to be had in seeing all of you at events, telling stories and remembering our past, and in making new memories. joy in your accomplishments, whether it is a breakthrough in your artistic studies, a particularly nice ght, or a perfectly hit target. now is not a time to let the falling of leaves lure you into bundling up and sleeping. now is the time to build friendships, to excel in your arts and sharpen your skills. while winter may be coming, the horns of war will soon again echo across our sylvan lands, and we must be ever prepared to rise to that challenge. for honor, for glory, for love, for æthelmearc! anna leigh from the kingdom seneschal, duke christopher: great officers— about half of have communicated to me regarding the state of your policies. please make sure that the policies for your office are in line with the society governing documents and forward them to me so that i may review them and present them to the crown. if you have done this within the last two years, please let me know as well. seneschals– there have been revisions to the society seneschal policies. please make sure that you have the most current version of the seneschal handbook from the society for your reference. also, long these same lines, please remember, that if you are having an event, that you must post the sca bullying and harassment policy. from the kingdom exchequer: greetings from your kingdom exchequer! i hope everyone is recovering from their summer, and is in good health. as the weather turns more favorable, the trees start to shed their foliage, and our attentions turn more toward indoor pursuits, i have some regular seasonal reminders. 3rd quarter reports are due on october 31st. now is the right time to make sure that all your records are in good order, all accounts balance, and all income and expenses are accounted for. most of the year is now behind us, and if everything is fine for the 3rd quarter, then adding the 4th quarter generally shouldn’t be too difficult. and should everything not be in order, now is the right time to ask for help . nmr payments are due 10 business days after the close of an event. this deadline has not changed. what has changed is that the society people have been strongly encouraging me to suspend groups who are out-of-compliance, especially groups who are repeatedly out-of-compliance. suspension can have a lot of bad effects, including cancellation of future events, a prohibition from paying for anything (possibly including your regular meeting rental), and double-secret probation. the ideal time to write the nmr payment check is at the event, just after having closed and counted out the cash box. however, for events where the local exchequer is not present, during the following week is acceptable, but please make sure to get the nmr payment handled asap. if an exchequer is going to be unavailable during all of that time, they should make arrangements in advance to leave the checkbook with one of the other account signers so that this other person can get the nmr dealt with. directions are in the exchequer’s section of the aethelmearc web site: http://aethelmearc.org/officers/exchequer/ call for letters: my second term will be up at pennsic next year. while i could take a one year extension, i’d prefer to not do so, but will if doing so provides for a smoother transition. i will be more than happy to act as a special deputy to my successor for several years to further ensure that everything continues to operate smoothly. in service, –tofi from the society seneschal – updated sca statement of core values: at the board of directors july 2018 meeting, the following change to corpora was approved and is to be considered effective immediately. “ sca statement of core values in pursuing its mission, the sca is committed to excellence in its programs, communications and activities and to act in accordance with the chivalric virtues of honor and service; value and respect the worth and dignity of all individuals; practice inclusiveness and respect pluralism and diversity; promote a safe and respectful environment for all sca events; act with transparency, fairness, integrity and honesty; be a responsible steward of sca resources; and, be committed to maintaining the trust of its members and participants. it is the expectation of the sca that its members and participants, in all events and activities of the sca, will conduct themselves in accordance with these tenets. “ corpora will be updated shortly. comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to: sca inc. box 360789 milpitas, ca 95036 you may also email comments@lists.sca.org . from the society seneschal – revised mission statement: after careful review and consideration of all feedback, the board of directors has decided to update the mission statement to be more inline with current society practices: the society for creative anachronism (sca) is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization. the sca is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat, culture, and employing knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities. the board of directors wishes to thank everyone who took the time to write in with their comments for the betterment of our society. should you have any comments, please send them with the subject line “revised mission statement aug 2018“. comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to: sca inc. box 36
